About Takenoko Tutoring
たけのこチューターについて
Takenoko Tutoring is run by college students who are native speakers of Japanese and fluent in English. Siblings Kasey and Cassidy Gillman, the founders of the program, have previous involvement with the Hinoki Foundation and other tutoring services.
Takenoko Tutoring is fully online, to allow access to a larger audience.
Classes are held on Zoom (a free online meeting app).
Please recognize that although we may have a lot of availability during the summer, we are busier throughout the school year, so we may not be able to fit as many sessions into our schedule.
たけのこチューターは大学生がひのき教育振興財団でのボランティア活動やその他の家庭教師の経験を活かして行っているプログラムです。教師は日本語と英語どちらも話せます。
たけのこチューターはオンラインのプログラムです。
レッスン/授業は全てZoomで行われます。
学校が再開するまではレッスンを多く予約することができますが、その後スケジュールに合わない場合がありますので、あらかじめご了承ください。

Kasey Gillman
I have tutored for the past 3 years, both as a private tutor and as a volunteer for Hinoki Foundation. I have worked with students who moved to America recently, and want to learn English, as well as students who are complete beginners in Japanese. I noticed that students find it easier to talk to a tutor who is closer in age to them, because there is more in common. I love watching the kids I tutor grow and learn, and seeing their progress over time. My goal is to make students feel confident in the language they’re learning.
私は2年間以上ひのき教育振興財団でのボランティアと家庭教師を通じてチューターとして働いてきました。私の授業は主にアメリカに引っ越してきたばかりで英語を学びたい生徒や、日本語を全く知らないけれど学びたいという生徒が対象です。この２年間を通して気づいたことは、先生が自分の年齢に近いと、生徒は「先生と話しやすい」と思ってくれるということです。私は生徒達の成長する姿を見るといつも笑顔になります。このプログラムでは、私の担当は基本的に1年生、5年生、6年生の生徒です。それぞれの生徒をしっかりサポートするよう心がけます。チュータリングをすることで生徒が学んでいる言語に自信を持たせてもらうことが私の目標です。どうぞよろしくお願い致します。

Cassidy Gillman
My tutoring experience started in 2021, when I volunteered for the Hinoki Foundation. During this time, I realized how much I enjoy helping students expand their language abilities.
I create lessons that fit the language level of the student and ensure that they strengthen their skills while having fun. I am most skilled at creating engaging slideshows and materials for tutoring sessions. It makes me smile to see students be proud of what they’ve learned, and be willing to learn more.
私のチューターとしての経験は、2021年にひのき教育振興財団にボランティアとして参加したときに始まりました。この経験を通して、生徒の学習を支援することがどれほど嬉しいことかを実感しました。私は様々な生徒に、それぞれ語学レベルに合ったレッスンを作成します。生徒が新しい言語を学びながら楽しめる授業にすることが私の目標です。生徒たちが学んだことを活用しているところや、成長しているところを見るととても喜ばしいです。このプログラムでは、基本小学２〜４年生の生徒を担当しています。どうぞよろしくお願い致します。

I just started my experience with Takenoko Tutoring in September 2024. Prior to this, I have experience working with middle school students from Japan to help improve all aspects of their English speaking and reading skills. I have always loved working with others and have even spent time myself living in Japan, learning the language and culture. I design my lessons to fit the unique needs of each student and am always open to suggestions.
私は2024年9月にたけのこチューターで経験を積み始めました。それ以前は、日本の中学生を指導し、彼らの英語のスピーキングとリーディングのスキルをあらゆる面で向上させる手伝いをしてきました。私は他の人と一緒に働くことが大好きで、私自身も日本に住んで言語と文化を学んだことがあります。レッスンでは、各生徒の独自のニーズに合わせてレッスンを設計し、常に提案を受け入れるようにしています。どうぞよろしくお願い致します。
Sydney Warner
I began working with Takenoko Tutoring in January 2026. I am a 2023 Michigan State University graduate, and am now beginning a master’s through MSU in teaching foreign language. My language teaching experience includes in-home ESL tutoring and working as an assistant teacher at Koby Learning Group. I also enjoyed volunteering with an after-school Japanese club through the Hinoki Foundation. I am passionate about helping people connect through language learning, and promoting bilingual communication. Just as my Japanese teacher did for me, I will design lessons around the student’s own interests to keep it fun and engaging.
私は2026年の1月にたけのこチューターで働き始めました。過去の言語教育経験としては、ESLのホームティーチャーや、「Koby Learning Group」のアシスタント教師として働いた経験があります。また、2023年にミシガン州立大学を卒業し、修士号を取得する予定です。現在、ひのき教育振興財団の中学生の日本語クラブでもボランティアをしております。言語を学ぶ人を繋げることと、バイリンガルコミュニケーションを進めることを大切にしております。私自身の日本語の先生のように授業を楽しくするために、生徒の興味をもとにレッスンを作ります。どうぞよろしくお願い致します。
Michael McDowell
Hi, I’m Michael McDowell, I am a 3rd year student majoring in Japanese at Oakland University. I have a strong passion for teaching and learning Japanese. As for my teaching experience, I’ve spent over 20 hours teaching with the Hinoki Foundation. On top of that, during the summer of 2023 I worked as an assistant teacher for Koby Learning Group, an ESL summer school. Despite being an assistant, I have taught classes many times on my own as well. I have experience teaching kids, teenagers, and young adults alike. From my experience as both a student and teacher, I’ve realized that in order to effectively learn, learning needs to be fun. So, I strive to tailor lessons to each student’s interest and needs to make learning as fun as possible for everyone.
はじめまして、マイケル・マクドウェルです。オークランド大学で日本語を専攻している3年生です。日本語を学ぶこと、それに教えることに強い関心を持っています。職歴としては、ひのき教育振興財団で20時間以上教えた経験があり、2023年の夏に「Koby Learning Group」というESLサマースクールでアシスタント教師としても働いた経験があります。アシスタント教師であるにもかかわらず、何度も一人で授業も行ったことがあります。これまでに、子供から大人まで色々な年齢の生徒を教えたことがあります。教師と学生としての経験から、効果的に学ぶためには学ぶことが楽しくあるべきだと気づきました。このため、レッスンは学生の興味に合わせて、いつも授業をするようにしています。どうぞよろしくお願いします。
Kerra Hinrichs
I began mentoring Japanese students in English in the summer of 2021, through the Come On Out Japan program. After graduating with a degree in Asian Studies, focusing on Japan, I served as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) in Gunma, Japan, for the 2024-2025 year. I enjoy creating lessons centered around conversation practice, but I also like to plan fun games to strengthen student’s language knowledge! Of course, each lesson will be tailored to the student’s needs. I tutor both Japanese and English. Let’s enjoy learning together!
私は2021年の夏に、「Come On Out Japan」というプログラムを通して日本人学生に英語を教え始めました。その後、日本研究を専攻してミシガン大学を卒業し、2024年から2025年まで群馬県で英語の先生として働いておりました。私のレッスンでは、会話の練習を中心とし、生徒の関心を高めるための楽しいゲームも取り入れています！学生の学びたいことにレッスンをしっかり合わせることを大切にしています。日本語と英語の両方を教えています。一緒に楽しく学びましょう！
